We believe the subaru engine is the best possible engine choice for the vanagon
for several reasons. It has excellent hp and torque through out it's entire
RPM range. It is an exceptionally smooth running engine(much smoother than the
2.1). It is easily aquired and parts are available everywhere. It is the closest
in size and weight to the stock 2.1 engine. It is very well built with a fully
counterweighted crankshaft and 5 full size mainbearings. It uses modern engine
management system that includes a knock sensor unlike the 2.1. If a modified
oil pan is used no ground clearance is lost and the engine fits perfectly under
the engine lid.
At H&R Motors our main goal in has been the qualitly of the conversion.
We strive to keep things as clean and simple as possible. We want the conversion
to be very easy to live with. For instance we make our oil pans so you can check
the oil through the liscense plate, not unloading all that stuff from the back
of your van. We keep parts like hoses and cables stock parts so you can easily
have your van repaired in the event of a problem down the road. We use only
the best possible parts available at the time of the conversion.
All of aur conversions
feature ceramic coated exhaust systems. All syncros have the skid plate modified
and remounted with no loss in ground clearance. We use a mandrel bent stainless
steel pipe for the radiator return hose to eliminate lots of rubber hose. We
install a large heat shield to protect the motor mounts and the timing cover
from the exhaust heat. We relocate the entire air intake system from the
right side of the van and modify it to work with the Subaru intake system on
the left side of the van. We retain the syncro dirt trap. Current cost
for a 2.2 conversion is 8000.00 plus the cost of the engine. This includes everything
except the A/C. Here is what is included. We remove the stock engine, coolant
hose,wiring harness etc. We install the engine with a reversed coolant manifold
self bleeding coolant system. The ECU is mounted in the factory location in
the modified VW ECU housing. We build a wiring harness that uses the stock VW
boot where the harness passes through the firewall. We reverse the wiring harness
on the engine to make the wiring much cleaner. The following new parts are included
in the conversion cost. All new exhaust system and oxygen sensor. H&R motors
oil pan and all cooling system parts including hoses clamps etc. All new belts,
oil, oil filter, coolant, spark plugs, nuts and bolts. New air filter housing
and filter. New adapter kit and motor mounts. New speed sensor and power steering
hoses. All other parts required for a turnkey conversion are supplied with only
the following exceptions; clutch, auto transmission oil cooler, and A/C conversion.
As for the motor we will no longer install used engines unless supplied by the
owner and as such not garanteed by us. We offer a complete rebuilt 2.2 engine
for 2500.00. The engine is completely rebuilt from valve cover to valve cover.
All replacement parts are OEM. This also includes all new timing belt and idlers
as well as a new water pump and thermostate. All 2.2 conversions are California
smog legal and come with CARB certification.
